Outdoor Research Ferrosi Jacket – Gear Review

“Simplicity is prerequisite for reliability”

This jacket has been a mainstay in my ski touring equipment for the last few years. Here in the Sierra Nevada the skin track usually involves slathering on a layer of sunblock and some lighter layers. The OR Ferrosi perfectly balances your need to stay warm in that mountain top wind – and – to dump that heat your body generates as you climb. It’s my favorite touring layer.Screen Shot 2017-10-19 at 6.45.56 AM.png

I tend to run hot and sweaty when I work out and have come to really love the lightest and most breathable gear for skinning. The OR Ferrosi jacket walks that line between offering excellent breath-ability for aerobic pursuits – that also blocks just enough wind and weather to keep you out of the elements.

One of the best features of the Ferrosi Jacket is the stretchy nature of the fabric. I have really put this jacket through the ringer when it comes to abuse; whether bushwhacking through relentless manzanita  or scrambling over rock, this jacket has shown virtually no wear and tear.

In review, I love this jacket! Pro’s and con’s include:

Pros:

-lightweight

-wind blocking

-water resistant (still beads slightly)

-easily washed (after every tour)

-packs small and light (packs into chest pocket)

Cons:

-no pit vents or venting options

….I can’t think of much else I would change about this jacket. I love the hooded jacket as I often wear a baseball style cap for most tours and adjust for cold or wind with hoods. I am a huge fan of Outdoor Research and find their gear to really hit the sweet spot on quality and cost. Check ’em out and get your own Ferrosi at Outdoor Research.
